Cerumen may be an infectious agent
Although cerumen is not considered an infectious agent unless contaminated with blood or mucus, due to its color and viscosity, visual detection of blood or ear discharge contaminants may be difficult. Therefore, you should treat cerumen as a potentially infectious agent. It is especially important to be mindful of using new tips when testing children and those with lower immune defence systems, such as the frail and elderly as they are more susceptible to infection.
